Making Compost and what to avoid
20th July 2011 • Northern Correspondent • Stephanie DonaldsonThe following items should not be put on your compost heap :
- Citrus fruit peelings – they repel worms
- Corn on the cob and broccoli stems – they take too long to break down and we inevitably have to sieve them out at the end of the year
- Leftover meat and fish
- Dairy products
- Perennial weeds that have gone to seed
- Diseased plants
- Dog muck and cat litter
- Egg shells – these attract vermin
We’re sure there are plenty of other things best avoided when making compost and we welcome you to comment if you think that something obvious is missing.
You’ll find a helpful list of good compost ingredients here – what to compost.
