photo of marwood gardens Marwood Hill Garden just outside Barnstaple in Devon where, in early spring, there are around 80 magnolia hybrids underplanted with narcissi and more than 800 cultivars of camellia flourish both outdoors and under glass. Established by the late Dr Jimmy Smart, this magnificent plantsman’s garden is filled with amazing plants.  Set in a steep-sided valley with a stream and a lake on the valley floor,  it  has a wide variety of habitats which allow the diverse collections to thrive. Specimen trees and shrubs are spread across the upper slopes, and down in the valley the lake is fringed with vivid astilbes and bog plants follow the line of the stream. Later in the season, 12 different wisteria come into bloom on the garden’s pergola. There is a nursery of plants propagated from garden specimens. Uusally open Mar-Oct, daily, 9.30am-5.30pm. There is an entrance fee.
