  • Bedfordshire’s Swiss Garden

20th May 2010Places to VisitStephanie Donaldson

Switzerland and Bedfordshire are not natural bedfellows but in the early 19th century, when an interest in ornamental gardening and picturesque architecture first came together, The Swiss Garden was created at Old Warden Park near Biggleswade. It is a late Regency garden and an outstanding example of the Swiss picturesque. The rustic cottage is the central element for this unusual and atmospheric 9-acre garden with its contrived vistas, grotto and fernery.  www.shuttleworth.org
