After reading that a rare example of the Denbigh Plum has been discovered quite far from home, growing in the garden Kelmarsh Hall in Northamptonshire I was curious to know more. Apparently it is the only native Welsh plum to survive and was first mentioned in 1785. It has large, round, dark-red fruit strewn with golden dots and the flesh is reportedly sweet and juicy with a good depth of flavour. For the first time in 100 years, trees are available to buy from www.iansturrockandsons.co.uk.  And if you want to go plum crazy, the town of Denbigh in North Wales holds an annual Denbigh Plum Festival.
