Pepper Problem

Ripening Pepper

It’s possible that peppers will join the list of plants I won’t grow next year. Now is a good time to assess the productivity of plants against the effort put into growing them and make a pragmatic decision. On this basis the peppers are definitely being shown their marching orders – peppers harvested – nil, peppers rotting on the plant – ten!  I’m keeping a beady eye on the one in the photograph, but given past performance, it too will succumb.  It’s possibly due to a variable watering regime, but whatever the reason I’ve decided to buy my peppers instead and devote the space to more tomatoes.

Greenhouse Effect

The tomatoes are romping up their supports with second or third flower trusses opening. Like last year, the Brandywine tomatoes are proving to be very leggy with a good 60cm between the trusses, so there’s a likelihood that they will hit the roof of the greenhouse before the third truss.  If they weren’t so overwhelmingly delicious I wouldn’t grow them again.  The peppers are planted in an old wine box and look very happy and the zinnias are coming on nicely.  I’ll plant them out on my return.  I’ve moved nearly everything else outside.
