A Jolly Jay – last week the bird bath temporarily dried out, but as soon as I noticed I filled it up. Within half an hour a jay flew down and proceeded to have a very thorough wash accompanied by a squawk of appreciation. It then hopped onto the rim, preened and then immersed itself in the birdbath again with more squawking. I hadn’t been expecting a vote of thanks.
