On The Allotment: September 2009

On the allotment: the Red Clover and Phacelia that Andrew planted as green manure a couple of weeks ago has germinated nicely. Most of his efforts are currently concentrated on harvesting fruit and the remaining beans.

In the garden: September 2009

In the garden: With the sweet peas finally finished and the gem squash foliage looking a bit worse for wear it was time to dismantle the twig obelisk, harvest the sweet pea seeds and pick the squash. A good soaking rain meant that the ground could be raked over and sown with Red Clover green manure.

In the greenhouse: September 2009

In the greenhouse: I’ve removed most of the leaves from the tomato plants to encourage the remaining fruit to ripen quickly. It is getting to the time when I’m itching to clear out the greenhouse and prepare to sow winter salads.

Mulling it Over

We’ve just returned from a short visit to Mull (note to self: stay longer next time – it’s a very long way). Aside from visiting the marvellous Lip na Cloiche Garden and Nursery www.lipnacloiche.co.uk, it was the natural beauty of the island that proved irresistible. The heather was beginning to colour the moorland and on the cliffs near the sea there were swathes of bright orange which we eventually identified as bog asphodel in its autumn colours. And the rowans were astonishing, so laden with fruit of such a fiery red that they acted like beacons across the landscape.

The wildlife was wonderful too; we watched a sea otter repeatedly diving for shellfish in Tobermory harbour, saw an eagle wheeling overhead at Lip na Cloiche and as we left, two pods of porpoises escorted our ferry to Oban. Wonderful.

I wish I had more photos but there was a problem with the memory card of my new camera. In case you find yourself with a similar dilemma, I eventually discovered that the lovely men at the Tobermory Off Licence and Hardware Store were able to supply me with a new memory card.
